HoloLens 2 and CAE: Making Healthcare Safer with Mixed Reality Solutions

| Roxanne Blanford

A pioneer in integrating augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) applications into healthcare training, CAE Healthcare now offers an expanding portfolio of solutions that are enhanced with Microsoft HoloLens 2 technology.

HoloLens 2 is an untethered, and ergonomically-superior, sensor-packed holographic computing headset. Through a marriage of innovative hardware design, artificial intelligence (AI) and Microsoft's cloud computing platform, Azure, HoloLens 2 provides users with a dynamic, immersive environment that helps to shorten the learning curve and strengthen skills retention.

Elevating Healthcare Training with HoloLens 2 and Interactive Holograms

The need to find new and advanced training modalities for making healthcare safer has been steadily growing due, in part, to a decrease in opportunities for clinical training hours with actual patients and the emergence of distance learning (remote and/or screen-based education).

From training in anatomy and diagnostics to acute and critical patient care, through long-term treatment and recovery, using extended (virtual, augmented, mixed) reality throughout the continuum of medical education and training is showing appreciable benefit.

Within the mixed reality environment of HoloLens 2, real and virtual worlds merge in such a way that a "see-through window" is created between them. A real-world object  (i.e, the user or learner) interacts with a virtual object (i.e, the hologram) and the user can execute practical scenarios (i.e., procedural training) in a natural-like manner.

Clinical learners engage with visual representations of blood vessels, the heart, bones, etc. (in 3-D or 4-D space and time dimensions in physiology) to develop improved and precise conceptualizations of the location of specific organs in relation to other internal organs and systems.

WATCH: HoloLens 2 and CAE Healthcare

From the first moment people put on the HoloLens 2 headset, the device gets to know them. The AI measures everything from the shape of their hands to the distance between their eyes, making the experience as close to instinctual as is presently possible.

Says Jamie Shotton, a partner scientist and lead of the HoloLens science team in Cambridge, United Kingdom:

"We want you to know how to use HoloLens without having to be taught how to use it. We know how to interact with things in the real, physical world: We pick things up, we press buttons, we point to things. We aim, as far as possible, to translate that directly into mixed reality.”

HoloLens 2 offers the most comfortable and immersive mixed reality experience available, with industry-leading solutions that deliver value in minutes—all enhanced by the reliability, security, and scalability of cloud and AI services from Microsoft."

Mixed Reality Training Solutions from CAE Healthcare

CAE's applications for Microsoft HoloLens 2 include modules for cardiac, respiratory, circulatory, and abdominal systems, as well as Ob/Gyn and birthing scenarios -- all displayed as interactive holograms that appear to be 'pinned to the world' while users move around and engage with anatomical structures in an instinctual manner.

  • CAE AresAR A pre-briefing tool that offers training in emergency care, and six of the most frequently encountered patient emergency scenarios (Sepsis, Pulmonary Embolism, Closed Head Injury and more), AresAR accelerates the learning of objectives that are relevant to prehospital providers, nurses, doctors, and other similar healthcare professionals.

  • CAE LucinaAR The first high-fidelity birthing simulator to offer real-time, interactive 3-D holograms of maternal-fetal anatomy, LucinaAR prepares teams to safely manage a range of normal and critical delivery scenarios.

  • CAE VimedixAREnabling immersive training in ultrasound scanning, imaging and diagnosis through augmented reality, VimedixAR builds a deeper understanding of the cut plane with respect to human anatomy and reliably accelerates learning.
