Simulation-based training can increase the effectiveness of operating room teams, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
In the study, faculty at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans conducted high-fidelity simulation sessions with interprofessional student groups and CAE Healthcare’s high-fidelity HPS. They measured the students’ teamwork competencies before and after the simulations, and reported immediate positive impact on their interprofessional attitudes and behaviors.

Effective teamwork in the operating room is often undermined by the ‘silo mentality’ of the differing professions. Such thinking is formed early in one’s professional experience and is fostered by undergraduate medical and nursing curricula lacking interprofessional education.
